PROVERBS 31:10 Who can find a virtuous woman?
for her price is far above rubies.

"We" understand that most ladies tend to prefer lap dogs....
Perhaps "We are" an exception. - Emily Bronte'

This page is for the purpose of introducing the “LADIES” of Family Affair Standard Poodles, both the human and canine varieties.

Just like our name implies, this is a “FAMILY AFFAIR”
Below you will be able to read a written introduction to our canine LADIES. Also, you can view slide shows, testing results, and pedigree information on the Standard Poodle LADIES of Family Affair. In addition we have posted the color and approximate weight and height of each of our canine LADIES at Family Affair Standard Poodles.

After the canine introduction you will be introduced to the human variety of LADIES, here at Family Affair Standard Poodles. You can see slide shows of the hard working Ladies here at Family Affair Standards. You will know each one of them by name as well as each one’s very important role in taking care of our Standard Poodle LADIES, GENTLEMEN and the puppies.

We have carefully chosen the canine LADIES of Family Affair Standard Poodles. Our first priority in the process of selecting our Ladies is health and temperament history. We have concentrated on conformation also. We have the more dainty fine-lined show type standard poodle puppies as well as the heavier boned, stocky-built, old hunting/retriever lines. We use our Ladies at Family Affair Standard Poodles to combine these two conformation types and are able to produce a great all-round standard poodle puppy for your next family member. The Standard Poodle Club of America is made up of humans. Some pretty special, amazing, dedicated humans, but still human. They write the standards for the breed, not AKC, and the standard has to some extent changed the original look and purpose of the Standard Poodle. We use this standard to pick and choose our babies purchased or kept for breeding but we sacrifice complete control of the EXACT AKC SHOW LOOK and select for more random qualities of beauty, temperament and health. Our main goal is to enrich the very small gene bank of the Standard Poodle pedigrees which is and will continue to be the best weapon against genetic disorders. We are sure the proceeding statement will raise some eyebrows and ruffle feathers and certainly become a topic on Poodle Forum, but we stand firm in this belief and respect those who disagree.

We have the ability with our canine Ladies to produce every color available in the breed of Standard Poodles. This list includes white standard poodles, cream standard poodles, apricot standard poodles, and red standard poodles. We offer the striking colors of jet black standard poodles, blue standard poodles, grey standard poodles, and silver standard poodles. In the brown family we have true deep brown standard poodles as well as the café au lait standard poodles and the gorgeous silver beige standard poodles. We have added, (in 2009) after lots of research and prayer, the ability to produce the very controversial colors of phantom standard poodles and parti standard poodles as well as brindle & sable Standard Poodles. We are trying to concentrate on the diversity of these colors by crossing our solid Gentlemen with our parti and phantom Ladies. In the selection of our Standard Poodle Ladies of the color variety we are striving to improve the health and conformation. Although these colors are allowed to be registered with the American Kennel Club, we hope someday these colors will be  accepted on a higher level with AKC as a color variety in the show ring, just as in the cocker spaniels and other breeds of color.  Some breeders PROFOUNDLY disapprove of any Standard Poodle with any color other than a solid color. It is a historical fact that the first 3 colors of the Standard Poodle were black, white and black & white combination, (parti color). To see early history pictures and read more about the origin of these poodles of color please click here .

Now I want to introduce the human variety of Ladies here at Family Affair.

My name is Wendy, (pictured on the left above) and I am the jack–of–all-trades at Family Affair Standard Poodles. I try very hard to be the manager but my mom who is supposed to be retiring, occasionally forgets who’s BOSS now. (2013) LOL!!! I do all the technical work on the website as well as the routine updates. My mom and Holley, my sister, helped me to design and write the website. I design and edit all of our forms and records we use in our daily work week and routines, (i.e. medical record cards, breeding cards, work schedules, etc.). I handle our relationships with Google, Yahoo etc. and other reputable standard poodle breeders. One of the most fascinating things I do is the research on color genetics and studying the pedigrees. I thoroughly enjoy sharing the responsibility with Erica & Sandy, examining and socializing with our Standard Poodle puppies.  I also spend lots and lots of time with our Standard Poodle puppies while taking pictures and videos. During these times I receive a lot  puppy kisses and I get to smell the sweet, sweet scent of puppy breath.  I am always busy in the public relations department. I fill in where needed as a nurse, mid-wife, and administrative assistant.

My mom’s 20 years of experience in breeding Westies and Standard Poodles has proven to be outstanding in the design of our breeding facility. The knowledge she has passed on to me is invaluable. It makes me so conscious of the importance of superior maintenance and routine repair of the grounds. This is huge responsibility as it covers the poodle puppy nursery, the pre-school area, as well as our teenage playground. My Mom’s wisdom of the grooming and medical care, as well as the mental and social well-being of our canine family members, make her the master mind behind it all. Most of the website photography is done by my mom, with Blake, my husband, learning fast and loving it.  Of course, all of us behind the scenes are making all kinds of weird noises to get the canine Ladies and Gentlemen as well as puppies to look at the camera and smile. We each share in editing and getting the photos ready for the website.

Mom and I both share the responsibility of placing our puppies into the right forever home. This is very important to us and we take it very seriously. All Standard Poodles have certain qualities, but varying degrees of these qualities. We try to get to know each potential new puppy owner and introduce them to puppies who match their lifestyle and personality.

Holley (pictured to the right above) has done a lot of research on things like dog food, training equipment, finding show handlers and advertising. She also did our co-efficiency work-ups and kept
www.PoodlePedigree.com up to date with our canine Lady and Gentlemen information. In addition to all of this, Holley handled our litter registrations and all of our AKC paperwork. She was in charge of getting our contracts and guarantees to you. She also helped me reply to emails and phone calls from you about our standard poodle babies. Mom still helps me answer emails when there are health questions or training issues that her years of experience better qualify her to answer. I am still learning and am sure I will for many, many years to come.

Late in the year of 2011 Holley weaned herself from working full time with our Standard Poodles because she was offered a wonderful opportunity to go back to her first love. She works with an amazing woman who has shown and trained Saddlebreds for years. Her name is Mary Ann Harris and she is Holley’s number two mom.  My mama is very thankful to Mary Ann for giving Holley the opportunity to do what she loves best and is such a great mentor and friend to Holley. Holley helps train and works the horses and has a great riding lesson program for children. Holley’s computer and paper work responsibilities with the Poodles have been divided between Blake & me.

Darlene came to work here in 2007 after Gina had to leave us due to health issues. Although we miss Gina, Darlene has been an irreplaceable addition to Family Affair Standard Poodles. She started out doing the daily poop scooping, cleaning, feeding and watering. She gave vaccines and medications. The list was endless. She had to put up with my mom, Holley and me and our constant barrage of “can you help me do this”, or “help me do that”. Most of the time she did all this with a smile and a cheerful “Hello Sunshine!” Notice I said most of the time. No one can deal with all of us with a smile every day. Darlene now helps manage the kennel and is the official full time groomer of all our Family Affair Standard Poodles and our Westies. Our Standard Poodle puppies get their first face and tail haircut, ear cleaning and nail cutting from Darlene.  Each of our adult Standard Poodles and Westies get groomed every 8 to 10 weeks so the grooming is a never-ending cycle. Darlene has done it all here at FAMILY AFFAIR, so if anyone’s absent she can jump in and take over their responsibilities for the day. We are so blessed to have Darlene. Although her first canine love is her Miniature Dachshund Raven, she is as dedicated to our standard poodle Ladies and Gentlemen and our standard poodle puppies as we are. My mama considers Darlene her third daughter. Darlene is loved and appreciated by all of us. She loves spending time with us even on her days off. One of our favorite things to do together is to watch the “CANINE SUPER BOWL”, the American Kennel Club Westminster Dog Show. All the human variety of LADIES here at FAMILY AFFAIR STANDARD POODLES hope to take a trip together to New York in the future to attend the American Kennel Club Westminster Dog Show.

Becca (fondly called Lil Becca) started here late in 2012. She took over a lot of Darlene’s old routine. The time we had her with us was cut short by the coming of a new baby girl. Her name is Shelby. The jobs Becca did here were very physical and mentally stressful and she was unable to perform her duties due to a difficult pregnancy. We miss her very, very much and hope maybe someday she will return in some capacity. Erica (you will be introduced to her below) has taken over Becca’s daytime responsibilities.

Erica was with us for over two years at the age of fourteen to sixteen. She came back to us on a part time basis at the age of 25 as a second job. She is very reliable and observant. As I mentioned above Erica has taken over Becca’ s responsibility’s  this year (mid 2013)and is now full time and still pulls night shift occasionally. Coming in at 6:30 am sharp every day, she begins with a quick hands-on inspection of all the babies. All the doggie doors to the whelping boxes and cottages where our mama’s and babies stay are opened and moms and puppies are let out into their yards and exercise runs to potty and play all day. She gives medication, routine wormings and vaccines as well. When our Standard Poodle puppies are born they are weighed and individually identified with different colors of fingernail polish applied to the rump for the males and between the shoulders for the females. This is a very important task that Erica is responsible for because this identifying polish color stays with the puppy for its entire puppyhood here at FAMILY AFFAIR STANDARD POODLES. Each day for the three weeks all our Standard Poodle puppies are weighed  and then three days a week until the age of four weeks. This process lets us know that each puppy is healthy because a puppy should gain weight every day at this young age. If there is any weight loss it is a warning that something could be wrong.  At the age of 4 weeks Erica starts to “test feed” the puppies every other day. The VERY FIRST sign of a puppy not feeling well is loss of appetite.  Causes could be from a minor cold, tummy virus or even an injury that is not yet noticeable by slow or lethargic behavior. Starting at three weeks of age, we keep dry puppy kibble available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to our babies.  Once a day, every other day, Erica feeds these four to eight week puppies an appetizing mix of chicken broth, kibble and canned puppy food. Any puppy slow to dive into this tempting treat is weighed and examined and watched closely for several days.  We are looking forward to working with Erica for many, many years to come. By the way Erica is very quickly becoming like my moms 4tht daughter.

Sandy is a good friend as well as our neighbor. She moved in the beautiful log home on the little mini-farm next to us in 2011. She was pleasantly surprised when she found out we raised Standard Poodles. She had a pair of Standards herself. Sandy has retired and wanted to help out part time, so we were MORE than happy to accommodate her. She has already proven to be an asset. Her attention to detail and the ease with which she learns everything will continue to be a help to us in the future. She does a lot of the editing for our website pages. She also performs Bio-Sensor (click here to read about the Bio Censor program) on the babies starting at 3 days old and continues this for 10 days. We have a series of socialization steps we start with each Standard Poodle Puppy between five and six weeks and Sandy is responsible for this routine as well. In addition to taking care of our puppies at a young age, Sandy works with the puppies we keep or buy for our breeding program on leash training, crate training, basic commands and socialization. She also at this time pulls the night and weekend shift. We hope to hire a young vet tech, Randy, to take over our evening and weekend shift the last of this year.(2013)Sandy is a vital part of our breeding program and we are very proud of her and love her dearly. All of us here at FAMILY AFFIR STANDARDS POODLES are glad to have her aboard.

As I stated above we hope to hire a young vet tech, Randy, to take over our evening and weekend shift the last of this year.(2013)We have had in the past some wonderful part time help for the evening hours and weekends. They would come in around 5:00 p.m. and stay till 7:00 or 8:00 P.M. during the week and sometime all day during the summer months. Saturdays they were usually here most of the day and we tried to keep Sundays as light as possible for them. The dogs and puppies must be fed, watered and given medications, as well as their kennels cleaned every day of the week, including Sundays and holidays. In the evening work hours,  these girls gave second doses of medication as needed. They gave the last hands-on exams of the day,They nursed or bottle fed any babies that needed an extra boost. They took any puppies or adults we were crating out for their last potty break of the day. They closed up whelping areas and tucked everyone in so moms would not have babies outside, but inside where it is warm or cool depending on the time of year. They helped out with night time puppy deliveries, whichrequired them to stay later than 8:00 P.M. and sometimes all night. Taylor was a senior in high school this year (2013) and left us in August to go to college. She was a very soft spoken, hard-working young lady. She did a great job checking all of our babies for the last time in the evening. She has a very tender heart and that was obvious with her patience and gentleness when working with the dogs. Some other part time young LADIES that have come and gone over the years are Cherise, who was a saving grace during a very difficult time for us in 2009 and 2010, Casey, Rebecca, Destiny and her sister Crystal. These were all very special young LADIES. Though FAMILY AFFAIR was just a stepping stone on their way to growing up and moving on to other careers, they each did a great job when they were with us.

My Mema, who is pictured on the home page in the rocking chair, was a successful breeder of Maltese for 15 years. She has had a lot of influence in the way we do things. My Aunt Beth helps us from time to time with paper work and the caring of our newborns. She is pictured in the slide show below this paragraph. Even my precious mother–in-law, also pictured on the slide show, does some of our editing and proof reading for the website. Mom, which is what I call her, has also helped with cleaning and other kennel chores in emergencies. The greatest thing “Mom” has done is, along with my parents, helped Blake and I financially to be able to move to my parents farm ARROWHEAD ACRES permanently. This has been such a blessing for Blake & me. We are right here with all of our STANDARD POODLES that we love so much. We appreciate her and my mom & dad for all their support and look forward to raising a family and living our lives out here on the farm.

My niece, Savannah is a real asset to us. She turned thirteen last year. (2012)She was born with the love of puppies in her genes. Savannah plays with and socializes our babies. She helps crate train them as well as bed train them. When she spends the night with mom (her Mamaw), she usually ends up with a baby in her bed. It is a common site to look outside and see Savannah with a puppy on a leash or chasing her down the path. She helps with the obedience process as well. She teaches our puppies to fetch and helps them with their first adventure into the wading pools and their first visit to the pond. She also loves that sweet puppy breath. Savannah inherited her mom’s love for horses and more specifically the Saddlebreds. She is at our farm a lot but since 2011 and she has also spent a lot of time showing the Saddlebreds with her mom. She loves the puppies and the horses.

Here at Family Affair we will continue to learn and evolve in an endeavor to make this a wonderful place to adopt or purchase your next family member, an amazing Standard Poodle puppy. With our selection of canine “Ladies” and with so many human “Ladies’” hard work and dedication, we are able to offer you a healthy, well-socialized, beautiful, and intelligent new family member from FAMILY AFFAIR.
